St. Benedict (480 - 543 A.D.) is known for writing the "Rule of St. Benedict," which became the foundation for community living in religious orders. He is also known to have had a signficant influence throughout the West on civil and religious government, and on the spiritual life of Christians.
His feast day is July 11.
In Jonson's sculpture, a thoughtful St. Benedict holds the "Rule" in his left hand, and with his right hand, beckons us to follow Christ with him.
