Statue honoring soldiers
to be placed in city park

A statue memorializing men and women who have lost their lives in combat will be placed in Veterans Memorial Park, the Sioux Falls City Council decided Monday.

The "Going Home" statue depicts a fallen soldier being carried to heaven by an angel. It was suggested as a suitable memorial by the family of Robb Rolfing, an Army Green Beret who was mortally wounded in Baghdad last summer.

Rolfing's family was on hand for the final step of approval, as was Sondra Jonson, the Nebraska artist who created the sculpture. Jonson will enlarge the sculpture, which has been on display in this year's SculptureWalk. It could take a year to finish the $150,000 project.

Private donations are being sought through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation to make it happen.
