CAMBRIDGE (SNR) Cambridge artist Sondra
L. Jonson, of St. John's Parish, installed the seven-foot by six-foot
bronze door sculpture she created at the chapel of the Sisters of
St. Joseph motherhouse in Wichita, Kan., April 5. The sculpture, which
represents a rising sun, was created from sheets of 16-gauge bronze,
cut and colored by the artist, with the assistance of Kruger's Welding
of Cambridge. The sculpture was designed to reiterate the image of
Resurrection, which is the theme of the chapel. The Doors
of Eternal Life are opened only at funerals, to walk a sister's
casket to the convent cemetery. Ms. Jonson is now creating a six-and-a-half-foot-tall
broze sculpture of the Risen Christ to be installed on the wall above
the door sculpture. The sculpture of Jesus rising in the Resurrection
will have bronze rays behind it, similar to the rays of the sun on
the doors. Jonson is also creating a processional cross, made of wood
and broze, with a resin-cast corpus, to be installed in the chapel.
