With a look of determination in his eye, and strength in his step, this WWII Airman strides across the tarmac, ready to join his crew for their next mission.
Inspired by the courage and commitment of all who served in the second World War, Jonson created this monumental Army Air Corps Navigator, as her tribute to those who offered their lives to defend our country and the world from tyranny.
The sculpture is part of the Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial in North Platte, NE. Standing seven feet tall, above a three foot pedestal, the Airman inspires the viewer with his energy, youth, and athletic grace. Also striking is Jonson’s use of detail in the work. All elements of the young airman’s uniform were sculpted from actual uniforms preserved in local museums. The model himself was a college student from Mid-Plains Community College in McCook , NE.
Shown at the right is the finished bronze of Flyboy.
